Debt matter Questions

I think someone who lived with us for a while has put us on a credit blacklist with his debts. How do I go about checking whether this is the case?

I paid £10,000 off the mortgage taken out by my son and his girlfriend. Their house has now been repossessed. Is there any way I can claim this money back from either of them?

I lent a friend £5,000 more than ten years ago, but he still owes me more than half of it. He runs a small service garage from rented premises and doesn’t appear to have much apart from tools and the like. How can I get the rest of the money? What would happen if he shut up shop?

Since my wife and I split up last year she has been using her position with a finance company to find out how I am managing financially. She tells me she has contacted the credit reference agencies to find out if I have paid off a debt, presumably in the hope that our joint creditors will come after me, not her. Is this illegal?

Some friends of mine haven’t had a lot of luck and lost a lot of money in a business venture. I was thinking of leaving them something in my will, but this may just prevent them claiming state benefits. Is there a way round this?

After losing a court case my husband couldn’t afford to pay the winner, whose name was then placed on the deeds to our house, to be paid if it was ever sold. My husband has now died, and although the bank changed the deeds into my name, the name of the man who won the court case remained. Shouldn’t this debt have died with my husband, and shouldn’t this person’s name now be removed from the deeds?

I missed several payments to a credit company. They closed the account and sent my name to a credit reference agency, but I still have to make payments before court proceedings take place. Can they send these details to a credit reference agency before taking formal proceedings?

I owed money which was in dispute, to a local trader who was declared bankrupt. To avoid legal action I ended up paying the outstanding amount to the trustees. Other clients were in a similar position, so I applied for a copy of the bankruptcy estate final account to ascertain how many paid up like me. However the trustees said they wouldn’t comply since I wasn’t a creditor. Surely this cannot be right?
