Areas of Law / Employment

I’m due to retire in September. The firm I work for would like me to continue working part-time, but I fear this could affect my old age pension. What’’s the legal position on this?

There’’s nothing to prevent you continuing work, full or part-time. You will still be entitled to collect your pension as well as your wages, and you will no longer have to pay national insurance contributions if you give your employer an “Age Exemption Certificate”; you should receive details of this when you reach 65. There’’s now no such thing as a retirement age: you have the same employment rights as everyone else and can still claim redundancy or plead unfair dismissal, for instance. These days more and more people are continuing to work beyond the state retirement age.
