Areas of Law / Employment

I have been working for a large haulage company for 10 years, but we’re concerned that we are not getting the statutory holidays. The company told us that bank holidays were included, but we’ve now been told we’re expected to work bank holidays!

Check what your employment contract has to say about holidays and bank holidays, assuming you have received a contract. If you haven’t, then your holiday entitlement will be based on custom and practice, and if you haven’t worked on bank holidays before you may be able to refuse to do so now. Most workers are entitled to 5.6 weeks’ holiday a year, but this can include bank holidays if you take them as holidays and are paid for them. If you’re being refused 5.6 weeks’ holiday ring the ACAS helpline on 0300 1231100.
