I was sold what I thought was a month-by-month gym membership. I discussed it in detail with the gym, and was assured I could cancel my membership at any time on a month’s notice. However when I decided to pull out recently they told me I couldn’t cancel it until I had been a member for a year. Is there anything I can do?

I take it you’re paying the fees monthly. Your discussion with the staff at the gym is as much part of the contract as any document you signed, so you could write to the gym detailing the conversation you had with the staff member and setting out your reasons for refusing to continue to pay further membership fees. Suggest that you will be happy for the issue to be decided in the County Court.
