Areas of Law / Employment

I work as a maintenance supervisor for a large firm. I recently spoke to a colleague doing the same job at a different location, and discovered he’s paid £1.00 an hour more than me, whilst he is paid 20p an hour less than a colleague elsewhere. Can this be classed as discrimination?

The difference in pay could be classed as discrimination if for example women, black, part-time or older maintenance supervisors were being paid less than their male, white, full-time or younger colleagues. Otherwise there’s no law which says that people doing the same job in the same firm should be paid the same rate. It’s obviously something you could complain about, and if you do so you should use the firm’s grievance procedure. If you are a member of a union they should take up the matter for you.
