Areas of Law / Employment

Recently the MD told junior management at our firm that if we are off work for whatever reason we may not get the full pay we have always received. He wants us to report to him when returning to work from illness, when he will decide whether we’re entitled to full pay or not. Can he do this? There’s nothing about this in our contracts.

The chances are the MD wouldn’t get away with refusing to pay you what you are accustomed to without good evidence that you were malingering but it’s possible you would have to take the matter to an employment tribunal in order to get a decision in your favour. It’s a threat that the boss probably won’t carry out; it could be just an attempt to cut down on absenteeism.
