Civil matter Questions

A firm of developers has started building houses about five feet from our boundary wall. According to the plans the closest house will have windows looking into three of our bedrooms and will destroy the privacy of our garden. Is there anything we can do?

I live in a rented flat over a shop, which both have the same landlord. The tenants in the shop have now placed advertising boards directly alongside my lounge window. I have objected to this: can I force the shopkeeper to take down the boards? What would happen if I took them down myself?

I sold a piece of land in 1990 to developers who built houses on part of it. They also built on some of my land that I didn’’t sell to them, but I didn’’t discover this until recently. I would like to have the land returned. How would I go about doing this?

I have recently received an order from the council seeking possession of my council house. I owe just under £1,000 in rent arrears. My local advice centre says there will be a duty solicitor in court. Is this correct?

I was quoted £195 including VAT for a full service on my car. I was therefore stunned to receive a bill for £320. The garage pointed out all the extra jobs they ha’d done, including changing the windscreen wipers. We paid them the £195 quoted, but we’ have now received a bill for the extra £125. Should we pay it?

Three years ago we moved into a detached house with a driveway down one side and a path down the other. The current owners of the house next door have used the path for ten years, and the previous owners did so before them. We don’t mind the neighbours using the path but it has been suggested to us that we could eventually lose the land if this continues.

I live in a flat owned by a housing association and pay a service charge of around £15 a week. In the two years I have been here the windows have only been cleaned a couple of times, the garden is overgrown and the cleaners vac the stairs once every two to three weeks. Should I have to pay for such a poor service?

Some months ago several of my employees were involved in a road accident in a company vehicle during working time. The insurers of the other vehicle are proposing to pay them only the difference between their normal earnings and their sick pay. This means I will have borne most of the cost of the accident through the sick pay I have had to pay out.

I bought some land 40 years ago which had a disused public footpath running across it. I built a bungalow on the land, but a few years ago the council told me I had no right to block the footpath, even though it runs through my garden. They now want £450 to divert a disused footpath.
