Areas of Law / Employment

I’ve had to leave my job through ill health. I worked there for 14 years, and was advised you were entitled to three months’ severance money, but my employer won’t pay. Can you advise?

If you left your job of your own accord your employer is under no obligation to pay you anything other than your final wage packet, unless your contract says otherwise. It could be that your firm has a pension scheme for people leaving for health reasons, and you should investigate this. If you were dismissed on health grounds you will be entitled to 12 weeks’ notice or pay in lieu. But it’s also possible that you’re confusing your situation with redundancy, where you would normally be entitled to 12 weeks’ notice or pay in lieu plus a redundancy payment based on your age and years of service.
