Areas of Law / Employment

The company I work for has been taken over recently and we’ve been told they can only guarantee our jobs here for a year. After that we’ll be working for the new firm’s contractors 30 miles away, who only have a five-year contract. Most of us would rather take redundancy. Do we have to move?

Your employer cannot simply avoid a redundancy payment by finding you a job in a different company. It would only avoid having to pay you if the part of the business you work in was being transferred to the contractor. The travelling is a secondary issue under the circumstances, and depends whether there’s a job mobility clause in your work contracts. When the time comes you should take detailed advice about redundancy.
