Areas of Law / Wills and Probate

Is a will normally read after a funeral, and if not, can the relatives ask for it to be read?

Wills are only read after funerals in romantic novels. Only the residuary beneficiaries – those entitled to the remainder of the deceased’s estate once specific gifts have been distributed, fees and taxes paid etc – are entitled to see a will in the first instance. After probate has been granted anyone can inspect a will at the probate office or online on payment of a small fee. It’s up to the executors whether or not they are prepared to show the will to relatives and others before then. Some small estates don’t require a grant of probate and so the wills never become available for inspection.
