Areas of Law / Landlord and Tenant Law

I would like to sort out who I should pay my flat’s ground rent to. I live in a listed building which comprises three flats and a house. I used to pay the ground rent to a neighbour who lives in one of the flats and who, until recently, owned the house. Now the man she sold the house to tells me I should pay my ground rent to him in future.

The owner of the house probably has a duty to collect the ground rent from the flats on behalf of the landlord. When your neighbour sold the house this duty was therefore passed to its new owner. Of course I’m guessing, and you should check your lease document to confirm this. You don’t need to pay your ground rent unless you receive a demand in a prescribed form.
