We had been renting a house for three years when the owner decided to sell up. The letting agent said there would be no problem finding another house for us, and we were just about to sign up when the agent withdrew the offer after carrying out a credit check, leaving us homeless. Is there anything we can do?
It sounds as though the credit check may just have been a pretext for getting you out, and I wonder if you were unlawfully evicted from the house you were renting. Although the landlord would probably have been able to get you to leave, assuming you initially signed an assured shorthold tenancy agreement, he may have had to go to court for a possession order with all the legal expense involved. If you were tricked into leaving you might be entitled to substantial compensation, and you should see a solicitor.
