Areas of Law / Divorce and Family

A woman on a TV programme was complaining that she couldn’t afford to get divorced, at which point a lawyer in the audience said he could get her a divorce for £50. Is this possible? I’ve been separated from my wife for five years and was told a divorce would cost around £1,000.

The lawyer probably said £550, which is the current fee for filing divorce papers at the County Court. However beyond that, in undefended cases especially, there’s nothing to stop you filling in the forms yourself. They come with explanatory notes to help you. If there are no children, or they have left home, and you can agree about splitting your finances, it’s possible you will get off lightly.
