Areas of Law / Insurance law

I recently bought a car which is wide enough to fit three people in the back comfortably, but the car is only fitted with two rear seat belts. Would a third person in the back be covered by insurance in the event of an accident?

Although it would probably be a good idea to have a lap belt fitted for the central passenger in the back it’s not illegal not to have one if the manufacturer didn’t supply one. Unless your insurance policy tells you differently your insurance cover shouldn’t be affected. However failure to wear a seat belt could amount to contributory negligence in the event of an accident, and any compensation payable may be reduced accordingly.
