Areas of Law / Wills and Probate

My wife says everything we own will belong to her if I die first. I would like to leave at least something to my children from a previous marriage. How would I go about doing this?

If your house is in joint names then she would automatically become sole owner on your death. You can prevent this by becoming tenants in common, with each having a separate share in the property. You could then leave your share to your children if you chose, although you would probably wish to allow your wife to remain in the property during her lifetime. You can dispose of any property or cash in your own name as you choose through a will as long as your wife is sufficiently provided for. I suggest you see a solicitor who will explain your options.
