Divorce and Family Questions

When I got divorced my husband was allowed a charge on the house at 26%, payable on my death or if I remarry or sell the property. My uncle has died and left me some money, and I would like to pay off the charge, but I don’t know how much this would be or how to go about it.

My husband and I are divorcing after eleven years’ marriage. Our bungalow is in my name only. Will my husband be able to claim a share of it since he has contributed to the running costs and done a lot of work on the house?

I bought a small house for my fiancé and I to live in once we were married. I bought it in my sole name, with the intention of putting it into joint names after the wedding. But he walked out after only a matter of weeks, leaving me with the burden of the mortgage and other debts from the wedding. Do I have any legal right to expect my husband to help out with the debts?

The settlement for my divorce was agreed in court at the beginning of December, but the money has yet to be paid. I have telephoned my solicitor on several occasions to ask what’s being done about this, but can’t seem to get any answers. I am paying my solicitor monthly, but I don’t feel this should go on much longer and would welcome your advice.

My partner left his wife some years ago. He’s likely to inherit a substantial sum of money from his mother, who’s not in the best of health. Would his wife have any claim on his inheritance, or would it be better for him to get a divorce now, before anything happens to his mother?

I left my husband in Majorca and returned to England. The divorce was finalised last October. He owns several properties, and we have a villa worth a lot of money in joint names. He now wants me to sign this over to him. I don’t understand the Spanish law about this.

I asked my solicitor to start divorce proceedings nearly 14 months ago when my husband left me. My husband agreed to everything and I had hoped to be divorced by Christmas, but I can’t get a satisfactory reply from my solicitor. How long should it take?

My partner left me four months ago, taking our six-year-old daughter with her. Our house is in joint names, and has equity of just £10,000. I have offered her £4,000 in settlement of any claim she has against the property but she won’t discuss it.

When my wife and I split up I was ordered to pay maintenance of £250 a month for my son. I was looking forward to ceasing payments now he is 18, but my wife says I must continue since my son is now at university. Where do I stand?
